10/10 - Perfect

Fifa 12 releases september 30th

It's no surprise that with a new FIFA game arriving each year, there's going to be an element of 'feature creep'. With such a short development cycle, there's only so much that can be binned and rewritten from scratch. Not to mention the fact that with so many people umbilically attached to FIFA's take on the sport, tearing out huge chunks of the game is a risky business. In light of that, there aren't going to be many people prepared for just how profoundly FIFA 12 will change the simulation of Blighty's most beloved sport.

Key to that change is what the dev is calling the FIFA Impact Engine. The result of two years of head scratching, pencil sucking and equation scribbling, this is a physics engine that dramatically increases the realism of player interaction.

Instead of the instant transitions between canned animations when players stumble and collide, you'll now get momentum, balance and weight-based clashes that take into account a frightening number of variables. The result is physical play that looks astonishingly authentic: if you come flying in for a tackle and clatter into the dribbling player's shins, they're going to go flying.

But it's not just the kamikaze stuff that benefits; the Impact Engine allows stronger players to demonstrate greater resilience on the ball, depending on their pace, centre of balance and where they're hit. If a player's balance is shifted towards his forward leg and his trailing one gets clipped, he's likely to be able to power through the contact. Catch the forward pin, though, and he'll end up arse over elbow. In addition, Impact mops up peripheral problems such as players clipping through each other during jostling play - every player now looks, feels and plays like a solid human being.

That would be impressive enough on its own, but EA Canada has tied all those sophisticated calculations into the injury system. The strength of the impact on limbs affects the likelihood of them being injured, and there's even maths in place to work out the amount of torque applied to joints. For instance, if a player falls awkwardly and wrenches his knee the wrong way, he's far more likely to be leaving the pitch on a stretcher.

There's even the potential for self injury. If you're working a player hard, steaming him up and down the pitch, and he stretches for a ball, he can end up with a strain that will put him on the bench for the rest of the match. Sprint button abusers beware.
Clearly these situations can rear their ugly heads in exhibition matches, but they'll have a far more profound effect on Career mode, where if you play a recently injured player too soon and he takes a hit to his gammy limb, you could be waiting another six months before you can play him again. There are even specific animations to account for reinjuries, with players throwing miniature hissy fits because they've been sent out without adequate recovery time.

As if reworking the entire physics engine wasn't enough, there have been dramatic changes elsewhere in the game as well. While it may not be as glamorous as scoring 30-yard screamers, the defensive side of football, which in an even match-up should be around half your time spent, has been completely reworked.

In previous FIFA games the Press button was so effective that it was very easy to let your eyes glaze over as soon as you lost the ball. You could just rely on the 'heat seeking missiles' to chase the player in possession and put in a standing tackle when they got close enough to you.

For FIFA 12, Press has been replaced with Contain. Now the player will keep at a distance, tweaked using the left analogue stick, and track the dribbling player waiting for the right opportunity to strike. The tackle itself is then a question of timing - the idea being that it'll be far more satisfying when you dispossess a player.

EA's hoping that by making defensive play more strategic, even nil-nil draws will be gripping and more players will actively select defensive positions in Online Team Play rather than all descending vulture-like onto the strikers and central midfielders.

Completing what EA has rather dramatically dubbed 'the trinity of gameplay innovations' is Precision Dribbling. While 360 dribbling had a profound effect on player control, in FIFA 11 they still had a turning circle like a canal boat. Real players can take multiple touches and barely move, but try that in last year's offering and you'll be snaking all over the pitch. To remedy that, the developer has added a third pace to accompany Sprint and Jog.

Precision Dribbling allows you to slow the game down, offering finer control and allowing you to dribble while shielding the ball from a pursuing player. Whereas before it was impossible to loiter at the top of the box, where teams like Barcelona regularly operate with deadly effectiveness, that portion of the pitch is now viable for probing the area.

Being able to hold up play until your team-mates provide options makes holding onto the ball a much more viable tactic, further reducing ping-pong passing without resorting to hobbling the player's skills. Strategy is now far more important than simply getting rid of the ball before you're closed down.

All this makes the latest in the endless line of FIFA games feel shiny and new. Whether or not you understand or care just how profound the under-the-hood fiddling has been, the end result is a game that looks and plays far more like a real game of football. There's going to be plenty to relearn this year.

The Darkness II releases October 7th

The Darkness II takes players down a brutal and personal path as Jackie Estacado, wielder of The Darkness an ancient and ruthless force of chaos and destruction. Based on the supernatural horror comic book series created by Top Cow Productions, Inc., The Darkness II breaks out of the sea of conventional first-person shooters with its fervid Quad-Wielding gameplay, which will allow players to slash, grab, and throw objects and enemies with their Demon Arms while simultaneously firing two weapons. The game is layered with the use of dark versus light, steeped in deep and twisted storytelling, and engulfed in stylistic violence that is visualized through a hand-painted graphic noir technique that stays true to its comic book origins.

It’s been two years since Jackie Estacado, now the Don of the Franchetti crime family, used The Darkness to kill the men responsible for his girlfriend’s murder. He’s been unable to shake the memory of Jenny’s death since bottling up his supernatural power, and now The Darkness wants out. A sudden, unprovoked attack on Jackie’s life heralds the start of a full-scale mob war, which has clearly been orchestrated by some outside force. The botched attempt opens the door for The Darkness to reemerge, and sets Jackie on a journey to hell and worse, as he unravels the mystery behind the attack and the motivations of The Darkness itself.

MW3 Releases 8th November

First confirmed authentic information on Modern Warfare 3 – Kotaku claim that below is the box art which will be used for MW3.with E3 in Los Angeles less than a month away, it now seems a certainty that we will have confirmation and the first real details of COD MW3 by that point, and quite possibly an MW3 demo.
Furthermore, the developers have vowed that MW3 will go above and beyond any of it’s previous COD titles, with the introduction of much wider scale, destructible . Modern Warfare 3 is suggested to carry on the story of the previous two games, but lets not forget their are still rumors floating around that we could see a prequel featuring ghost, how popular this would prove amongst gamers is yet to be seen, though.
While Activision opted not to release any details of it’s upcoming title in its Q1 investors conference call on the 9th of this month, they did state that details on the series future would be made public in the “coming weeks”. So, will this be in Los Angeles at the E3 Conference in just under a month, or perhaps even sooner?

The city of Constantinople will be divided into four districts: Constantin, Beyazid, Imperial and Galata. Though players will also be able to visit Cappadocia. The gameplay system from Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood will be the basis for Revelations, though Ezio's skills, like free-running and combat, will be upgraded with new features.A new item called the Hookblade will be introduced which will allow Ezio to use ziplines throughout the city, speeding up navigation by around 30%. The hookblade would also be able to be used to pull enemies towards you, enabling the player to start or prolong combination attacks. Eagle Vision will now be known as Eagle Sense, which would allow the player to focus on a character and determine the route taken by them, as well as giving the player an estimation of where they will go, which could be useful for ambushes or locating a secluded place to strike a target. A new crafting system will allow creation of bombs, with the option of upto 300 different types. These bombs could be utilised along with Eagle Sense to lay traps for guards. The concept of Borgia Towers has been expanded, and in order to neutralize Templar presence, various assault scenarios must be completed. The liberated buildings will be known as "Assassin's Dens" and control over these dens can be lost when Templars try to overtake them once more. These assaults will be triggered when the player's notoriety increases, and the Assassin's Den would be lost if they fail to neutralize the attack. Though, Assassin's Dens can be protected, provided that the player assigns a Master Assassin to overlook the building and prevent any further Templar attacks on the building they are posted at. The cap for the Apprentice Leveling system would also be raised to 15.Meanwhile, the modern day aspect of the game will also be upgraded with a new feature, tentatively labeled "revolutionary gameplay", in which Desmond Miles will need to change the construct of his ancestors' memories and in the process, unravel the future. He will re-enter the Animus and find a safe-mode called "The Black Room" where he will reintegrate the splintered layers of his subconscious. The game will come with a multiplayer mode like its predecessor Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, though it will be upgraded with new modes, maps and characters to refine the experience. It will now feature customization, allowing the player to choose their own weapon and change their appearance, editing clothes and other minor features.

The Elder scrolls v skyrim releases november 11th

Skyrim, your character develops from scratch based on the skills you decide to level up, meaning it’s possible to create a rounded character who can do a bit of everything, or go slap happy with a sword and take a more focused warrior role. As in Oblivion, the individual skills you level up contribute to an overall level. When your character advances you get to attribute extra health, magika or stamina. There won’t be a level cap, but your character will find it harder and harder to level as you stack up the skill points. Character creation has been improved and you’ll be able to choose from one of 10 races when creating a character.

The 21 skill variants of Oblivion have been pruned to 18. The spell school Mysticism has been chopped, but beyond that not much has been revealed about the abilities in the game, except for one new addition. You’ll now be able to dual wield weapons. Bethesda have said that one of the main focuses of the game has been on improving combat to make it more “dynamic and tactical”. There will be unique finishing moves based on the weapons you’re using and the enemies you’re facing. Speaking of enemies, zombies, skeletons, trolls, giants, ice wraiths, giant spiders, wolves, horses Elk, mammoth, saber-toothed cats, were-yetis and of course dragons have all been confirmed.

Homefront review

Homefront houses an assortment of attention-grabbing treats - from stirringly evil antagonists to the fiery splendour of a phosphorous downpour; heartbreakingly childish reminders of your domiciliary surroundings to the bullet spray of Sentry towers that test every morsel of your flanking smarts. But far too much of your time is taken up staring at Connor, being barked at by Connor and, naturally, following Connor. It's more than a little annoying - because quite frankly, Connor is a massive pillock. By the end of Homefront's compact campaign, you're likely to end up hating him almost as much as your conscience-free Commie enemy.

large scale Ground Control missions, a fierce Skirmish mode and an impromptu priority-based mission generator in the form of the Battle Creator, and Homefront's multiplayer really packs a punch. We'd go so far to say that this is the classiest, best value multiplayer shooter on the market, comfortably bettering both recent CoD monsters and edging ahead of Bad Company 2. It deserves a wide, fully engaged audience.
If you're looking for a military-style shooter that offers something genuinely different; one with a smart narrative pull in an evocative world that borrows from the very best, you'll struggle to go wrong with Homefront. The campaign length is an obvious let-down, as is Kaos's refusal to let the player find their own way - but the quality of the multiplayer is a fine counterweight to both.

Crysis 2 review

Crysis 2 does an excellent job of portraying a city under siege without indulging in constant action-film cutaways. There is still plenty of cinematic excess here, though it's delivered organically. But rather than wrest control away from you to highlight every falling skyscraper, collapsing passageway, and hovering alien ship, Crysis 2 allows these events to simply happen. And, because they are often so momentous, your attention is drawn to them. The few occasions when the game stops to consider how the average citizen might be affected by an alien invasion lend humanity to your militaristic actions. Familiar landmarks are defaced, lay in ruin, or explode as you watch.

If you appreciated Crysis as a technical benchmark, as well as an excellent shooter, you might be surprised by Crysis 2's more modest menu options. But to pick these nits with much vigor would be unfair to one of the best-looking games in recent times. Crysis 2 looks stunning, runs smoothly on even modest systems, and suffers from few obvious bugs and glitches.

And the mission in F.E.A.R. certainly counts as above and beyond the regular call of duty. As explained in the opening sequence, a military commander, named Paxton Fettel, goes insane and takes over a secret army of cloned soldiers that are telepathically linked to him. Fettel and the battalion of elite soldiers then go on a rampage in a nondescript American city. F.E.A.R. strikes a balance between spooky atmosphere and electric action. The AI opponents are incredibly sharp and will do things that you don't expect, like pin you down while one of them flanks you.

The game's story follows two mercenaries, E'lara and Caddoc, who are off on an adventure primarily for fortune. When we learned that Caddoc had a vision of an ancient artifact, our first goal was to see about that artifact. You can play as either character, swapping between the two checkpoints that come up in between areas. Because the two character's fighting styles are very different--E'lara is more of a ranged fighter with her bow, whereas Caddoc melees with an assortment of large weapons--the experience will be unique for each character. Our demo began by leading us through decaying ruins, overrun with weeds and rotting corpses.

Mortal kombat review

This Mortal Kombat is a revamp that returns to the series' roots while taking notes from the competition. We're back to a 2D fighting plane with a five-button layout that delivers punches and kicks in ambidextrous variations. The combo system retains the uppercuts and sweeps, each character has a selection of one-hit strikes and multi-hit assaults that can be combined with their special attacks. This means Scorpion can start with a two-punch combination, cancel into his "get over here!" special and then propel his victim into the air with a launcher before finishing with a well-timed dash uppercut. That's a five-hit combo that uses a more freeform combat system, and while past Mortal Kombats had an illusion of freedom – but were ultimately scripted – this Mortal Kombat encourages players to find the limits for themselves.

Fighting earns Kurrency which can be spent on concept art, secondary Fatalities and alternative costumes.
Further tech has been introduced with a three-tiered super gauge. One bar nets you an Enhanced special that works like the EX system from Street Fighter III, while two lets you break free of a combo.Save up for the full three bars and you'll gain access to the X-ray. These are Mortal Kombat's own-brand supers, except rather than a massive fireball or elongated combo, the effects are typically more brutal. Baraka impales his opponent on one claw before puncturing the neck and eye socket, Kano splinters both femurs with twin daggers before booting his opponent in the face and Johnny lands multiple shots to the crotch before breaking his opponent's back with a devastating elbow drop.

Its release date has now been pushed back five months to allow fans hands-on access to a beta version of the multiplayer on dedicated serversThere has been no announcement made yet as to when the multiplayer beta will go live. However,Epic Games, the developer of the Gears Of War franchise, says that Gears Of War 3 will be the final instalment in the game's current story arc that features the character of Marcus Fenix and the Delta Squad, and their battle against the Locust Horde. Dirt 3 releasing on may 24th

Dirt 3 will boast more cars, more locations, more routes and more events than any other game in the series, including over 50 rally cars representing the very best from five decades of the sport. With more than double the track content of 2009’s hit, Dirt 3 will see players start at the top as a professional driver, with a top-flight career in competitive off-road racing complimented by the opportunity to express themselves in Gymkhana-style showpiece driving events.

Kenya is one of the traditional rally locations returning in Dirt 3, offering a barren, dusty alternative to the wintry wonderland of norway. The team has already hinted about the potential for further  locations to arrive via DLC.

portal 2 coming very soon!

The new Portal 2 game is releasing tommorow.

Coupled with the Orange Box in 2007, Portal was a surprise hit. It was a revolutionary concept where the player used a gun in the first person to create portals and travel any distance instantly. With the two portals being both an entrance or exit, they are used to complete test stages that get progressively more complex. The game had a defining ability to reward you with those ’A-HA!’ moments when you finally figure out how to solve a puzzle that’s been plaguing you for what seemed like days. This great game earned critical acclaim and countless Game of the Year awards. Portal 2 will continue this trend.

Once again you are Chell, the voiceless portal gun wielding test subject. You’ll traverse behind the scenes, deciphering how to navigate the ruined innards of Aperture Science laboratories, and of course through diabolically engineered test stages designed to frustrate and murder you. Like the first game you occasionally encounter the mad ramblings of those previous test subjects who came before you, scrawled on the walls, depicting impending doom or incomprehensible phrases.
